By 2001, I had completed over one hundred paintings — my interpretations of important events, national myths, and famous (sometimes infamous) Americans. I focused on American moments over the past 200 years that, for some reason, had gone unpainted — a patchwork of paintings to fill the cracks other artists had missed. Included in this collection were all the presidents of the United States and their wives.

As the paintings evolved, it wasn’t the events that held my interest as much as the philosophical underpinnings of the people involved: what brought about an their actions, and what were the consequences — public triumph, personal tragedy, love, betrayal, power and its loss, brilliance, mediocrity, poverty and a climb to riches, crushing fate, great opportunity, and apple pie.

Presidents are featured under “Other.”
